Finally! Just A Solid, Fun, Good Episode ‘Glee’

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! ALSO – BAD SPORTS ANALOGIES AHEAD! THEY’RE JUST AS BAD AS SPOILERS!

To me, if I look at it without my Unabashed Gleek bias, ‘Glee’ seems to either hit the ball out of the park, or strike out every episode. There are no…ummm…crap. I don’t know anything about baseball so I’ve lost this analogy. What’s it called when your hit sends a runner or two home? Not a home run but something still good? THAT’S what ‘Glee’ seems to lack, just the basic good episode. To me? Last night was it.

First? The PERFORMANCES. I’m not a big fan of the song ‘Red Solo Cup’ but the sectionals performances? SCORE ON ALL FRONTS. I’m buying the Troubletones mashup and plan on singing it as loudly as possible when no one is around. And ‘Control’ – HOLY CRAP, I loved it. Actually, I loved the entire New Directions Jackson Family tribute. GREAT singing, dancing, and just all around Get OUT OF YOUR DAMN CHAIR, MR. CHANG! Performances.

Even the plot lines were good! Once you look past how easy it was for Sam to just come back to McKinley (Where’s his proof of residency? I had to practically give a blood sample just because we moved into a new house in the SAME DISTRICT.) it was just a nice episode to sit back and enjoy. I love Sam being back. I wasn’t uber-attached to him last year or anything, but I think his character adds a great dynamic to the group. I LOVE that they followed through and tied up nicely TWO DIFFERENT STORY LINES. Can you believe it? The resolution to the story about Mike’s Dad was well executed and felt solid and the Quinn finally gave up on the GET BETH BACK! crazy train. I like that Rachel was the one to show her how sucky it feels to screw up. I like that they didn’t do any dramatic TEACHER SLEEPING WITH STUDENT storylines. Simple, tied up, done.

I LOVE that they gave Blaine an opportunity to ask Finn WHAT IN THE HELL IS HIS PROBLEM? That’s been bugging me all season, why was Finn being such an ass to Blaine? They were buds last year! He’s dating his brother! They should be friends! And I’m glad Blaine got some scenes without Kurt, to let us see him as a character OTHER than Kurt’s boyfriend.

I LOVE SEBASTIAN. I mean, I hate the jerk for trying to breakup Klaine, but I also love him because he is so unapologetic about it and I think that is FUN. I mean, I love Klaine with all of my heart, favorite couple on TV right now, but it can’t be puppy love all the time, you know? So, getting to see Kurt pissed off and snarky? LOVELY.

And that brings me to my favorite part of last night’s episode. Kurt’s Background Moments. There are Tumblrs created just for Kurt’s background moments (WHAT IS OUTSIDE THE CHOIR ROOM WINDOW?) and they had tons last night. Chris Colfer can give a look that says 1 million words and he gave tons of them last night. His fake smile to Sebastian when he was talking at the Lima Bean was priceless. So good it overshadowed the eye-roll he gave when the guy with, “The CW Hair” first sat down. I loved his shock (and disgust) at seeing Blaine sing and dance to ‘Red Solo Cup.’ He was adorable stopping himself from doing what Sam was teaching once he saw Blaine was mad about it. His reaction to seeing the Unitards and then his enthusiasm for their performance? LOVELY. And my favorite part was when he stepped into the limelight for that one sassy hip-shake in their performance that was SO HILARIOUS that I just wanted to declare him the winner on his own.

Just a fun episode. The reason why I still stand by this show and probably always will.

  1. I loved last night’s episode! Even Red Solo Cup, which I had never heard. And that last song, when they all came together, practically had me in tears. I don’t know what I am going to do next season when half this cast is gone!!!!

    1. I’m choosing not to think about that right now :) Although Tina and Blaine are so spot-on this season I think they’ll do a good job building a solid year! I HOPE.

  2. You almost make me wish I was watching ;) I’ve heard the Red Solo Cup song elsewhere, and it makes me shake my head in half humour/half dismay.

  3. I thought it was a pretty good episode, though I hated their choice of “Control.” Blech. Just not a good glee club song for me. Otherwise, I loved New Directions at sectionals! So very glad Quinn stopped trying to ruin Shelby’s life and get Beth back! I wish they’d give Rory a story line. I love him!

I am totally not a fan of Blaine, so whatever he does neither bothers me a lot nor does it make me particularly happy.

I am completely happy that Sam is back even if it was weird how he was just able to come right back into that school no questions asked. We had to jump through all kinds of hoops to keep our kids at the same elementary school this year when we moved to another elementary district. Ah, the magic of TV! ha ha

I miss the Glee of Season 1, especially the first 13 episodes, so badly that it is just hard for me to thoroughly enjoy the show now because it just feels like something is missing. However, I enjoyed last night for the most part so I’ll give it a one thumb up. :)

    1. I don’t know if I’d be as big of a fan of Blaine if I hadn’t been a fan of Darren Criss since his Harry Potter musical. I mean, I think I’d still like him, but my love of Darren Criss is GRAND so I’d probably tolerate a lot :)

  4. Can you please link us to some of those Tumblrs? Chris Colfer is one of my favorite things about this show (the other two being Brittany’s one-liners and everything about Matthew beautiful Morrison), and I would very much like to get lost in a Tumblr full of his background moments :)

And I keep wondering what they’re going to do next year when half the cast goes to college. On the one hand, I think it will really ruin the flow of the show to keep the cast and have to split airtime between Rachel and Kurt at NYADA and the others at McKinley, but on the other hand, I just don’t see that they’d get rid of the main actors.

But I said the same thing about Friday Night Lights, and if anything, I loved Vince even more than Smash. And I was sort of glad to see Jason go. (Though I’m very, VERY grateful they kept Tim Riggins around, because come on. The man is a Greek god of gorgeousness.)

    1. Oh, Man. I don’t even know where to begin :) How well do you know Tumblr? You have to be careful sending out links to blogs because sometimes things get VERY ADULT CONTENT so I don’t want to accidentally do that to you :) Most of the tumblrs I follow seem tame though. MOSTLY.

Here’s two I found just know that had put Kurt stuff on my dashboard:
      http://churchofcheesus.tumblr.com/
      http://kurchel.tumblr.com/

They both have tags either Kurt Hummel Background Moments or just Background Moments. Also – search Tumblr in general because there really are TONS. I follow tons of Glee Tumbl blogs, once you start following a few you’ll see stuff they reblog and your list will grow. Just be careful! You’ll be minding your own business and BAM! Nudity! AAAHHH!!!

I love Tumblr with all of my soul, but man, sometimes there’s just unexpected stuff that pops up :)

    2. Erin –

I’m suddenly wanting to email you and fangirl with you over Chris Colfer. They just released some still from the next episode (the Christmas one) and in one of them he looks SO GORGEOUS I just need someone to see it and think the same thing! But I’ll refrain…you’re welcome.

  5. Best Kurt background moment is still his puppy-love face in the middle of the Gap attack. And if Blaine succumbs to Sebastian I may never be able to forgive the Glee writers.

However – your main point? Yes. Last season they alternated GREAT with BLAH. This was just happy goodness. Yay.

  6. I’m so with you on this episode! I loved it so much that after it was done, I immediately re-watched the whole thing, fast forwarding to my favorite parts, included: coffee-shop scene, Sectionals (go TINA!) and the final song, of course. Did anyone else get all teary during the final song? Maybe I’m just lame.

  7. I felt all of the same ways about this episode. I was just so…pleased at the end of this show that I felt like Glee had resolidified its place in my heart. And now the rest of my day shall be spent searching for Kurt Tumblr pages.

  8. I couldn’t read this last week because I hadn’t gotten to Glee on my tivo yet. And I totally agree…just a solid episode start to finish. And I love love love how they are pulling the two groups back together. I mean, yeah Rachel can sing, and Mercedes has serious pipes, but I LOVE Santana – she’s got SUCH talent and was relegated to just being the b*tch most of the time up until now with so few solos. So I’m seriously happy that they’re going to keep Troubletones numbers in the mix.

This episode was the bright spot of my weekend and I only hope that they keep it up. I need something that brings instant smiles.
